Emma Roberts is excitedly counting down the days until she welcomes her first child with boyfriend Garrett Hedlund. Though she’s now a glowing mom-to-be, Roberts went through a lot to get pregnant, recently opening up to Cosmopolitan about her journey.

The cover star – who is the magazine’s first pregnant cover model! – got candid about her endometriosis diagnosis, the process of freezing her eggs and the news about getting pregnant.
After years of suffering from “debilitating cramps, and periods” Roberts was finally diagnosed with endometriosis, though by that point the disease had already affected Emma’s fertility.
Her recommended that the actress explore freezing her eggs.
“To be honest, I was terrified,” the Holidate star said. “Just the thought of going through that and finding out, perhaps, that I wouldn’t be able to have kids.”
Roberts struggled with feeling guilt about her diagnosis and the potential effect it had on her fertility. She found solace in opening up to other women.
“All of a sudden there was a new world of conversation about endometriosis, infertility, miscarriages, fear of having kids,” the actress said. “I was so grateful to find out I was not alone in this. I hadn’t anything wrong after all.”
Roberts revealed that she did move forward with freezing her eggs, but did not say whether or not she used the eggs to get pregnant.
“It sounds cheesy, but the moment that I stopped thinking about it, we got pregnant,” she said.
For several months, Roberts kept the news to a small circle of family and friends before sharing the news publicly.
She and Hedlund are now preparing the nursery for the arrival of their baby boy.
“Sometimes I think about seeing him in the morning and how I want to say good morning to him and how I want to put him to bed at night, all those things that end up creating your sense of safety,” she said. “Sometimes it’s scary, though, because I’m responsible for this child’s world and memories, and I want to make it all wonderful.”
