In 2019, Jessica Simpson welcomed her third child – a daughter named Birdie – with husband and former NFL tight end Eric Johnson. In the three years since, she has been open about her 100-pound weight loss journey and five-year sobriety from pills and alcohol, leaving many fans worried and concerned.
Their worry only continued when Simpson partnered with Pottery Barn Kids in an Instagram video – which she posted to her account on November 3rd. The video itself is absolutely harmless as the 42-year-old mother showed off her three-year-old daughter’s room, styled and furnished by Pottery Barn Kids.
And while some fans shared their love for the room, a majority of the comments targeted her ‘sick’ and ‘frail’ appearance – citing her sunken eyes, slurred speech, inability to focus, awkward behavior, and weight loss that seems to have exceeded 100 pounds. The concerned fans pleaded for her to get help.
Simpson originally opened up about her addiction to pills and alcohol in her 2020 memoir Open Book – she also revealed for the first time that she was sexually abused in her younger years. In the book, she explained how she was ‘killing myself with all the drinking and pills,’ but eventually got sober in 2017.
Two years later, she started to lose weight after giving birth to Birdie – noting the biggest thing she changed was her diet and getting her ‘eating habits right.’ In April 2022, she posted a photo of herself in a bikini on Instagram, marking her success in losing 100 pounds. That’s when fans really started to worry.
As for the Pottery Barn Kids video, the comments section was lit up with what some users referred to as judgmental critics and others referred to as concerned fans. One user directed the singer to ‘blink twice if you need help,’ while another user wondered if they were the only person that noticed her slurred speech.
It wasn’t all negative. In fact, some of Simpson’s fans came to her defense. “Can we normalize NOT talking about other people’s bodies/faces/appearances? She’s criticized no matter what she does,” said one user, while another user wished people would be ‘kinder’ – adding it’s really none of their business.
Jessica Simpson Responds to Criticism Through Music
While she didn’t directly address the comments, it appears Jessica Simpson has read (or at least been notified) of the concern/criticism she received in her Pottery Barn Kids video. On November 7th, just a few days after posting the video, Simpson posted another video of her singing a song she recorded herself.
She wrote an extremely long caption explaining that she was in the studio because it’s where she can heal. “As much as I have learned to block out destructive noise…peoples’ comments and judgements can still hurt deeply with their incessant nagging “you will never be good enough,” she said in the caption.
“I am capable of pretty much anything I care enough about to put my mind to. I am present. I am deeply inspired. I am determined. I am honest. I care about other people,” she continued. “We all have our days of wanting to be, look, do, and feel better. Nobody is alone with that feelin’ that I can promise you.”

She went on to declare she won’t give up on herself just because someone else is. Instead, she’s going to stay true to herself because it has ‘worked for me in this chaotic life thus far.’ “Nothin’ and nobody will rob me of my joy. Ya might come close but it is mine to own. Yours should be too,” she ended the caption.
