Michelle Obama gave a touching tribute to her husband, former President Barack Obama, in a recent Instagram post – which also detailed some of the best advice she has for marriage and relationships, in general. The post comes as Obama promotes her newest book, The Light We Carry, on her book tour.
“As an adult, I’ve lived in a number of places, but as far as I’m concerned, I’ve only ever had one real home. My home is my family. My home is Barack,” said Michelle in a lengthy, yet thoughtful Instagram caption. She went on to explain that while her love for Barack is strong, it hasn’t always been perfect.
“But here’s the thing—our marriage has never been perfectly 50-50. One of us is always needing more or giving more. We have to be willing to listen to each other, honestly and without defensiveness. Only then, can we evolve together,” she continued, describing the give-and-take attitude you need with your partner.

Michelle Obama preached about finding meaning in your relationship. She doesn’t want couples to be afraid of asking themselves, “Who are we and who do we want to be?” adding that there’s a difference between having a wedding and being in a lifelong relationship with someone – you have to decide what’s at stake.
“You have to prepare yourself for long stretches of discord and discomfort. You have to learn how to make real compromises in the way you’ve lived as an individual. Glamorizing a relationship while you’re dating will lead you straight to difficulty once you’re married,” she wrote, adding you can’t ‘paper over problems.’
Michelle Obama ended the post by asking her followers to share any advice they have through their own experience with marriage or relationships. With nearly 5.5 million likes and endless comments from fans and followers, Michelle almost broke the internet with her question – and got a lot of quality advice.
“Although it may seem simple, practice saying Thankyou. Do not take anything done by your partner for granted. Everything your partner does is by choice, so learn to appreciate the small and big things,” said one user, with another user agreeing and adding, “Always remember your manners in your marriage.”

When you have that amount of time alone to think about yourself, your life, your world, for me, I was just spinning,” she said. In order to get herself and her family through the uncertainty, she recounted several lessons her father taught her.
“When your father is disabled, you are living with a level of uncertainty your whole life,” said Michelle, adding that one of his favorite mottos was, “You fall, you get up, you carry on.” She said another one of his favorite mottos was ‘no one can make you feel bad when you feel good about yourself.’
